Cougar's Early Goals Not Enough, Earn Draw With Cincinnati-Clermont
(Highland Heights, KY)-- The Cleary Cougar Women's Soccer team started off a Labor Day Weekend trip today. They traveled down to Highland Heights, Kentucky to take on the University of Cincinnati-Clermont College Cougars.
Cincinnati-Clermont would come out firing away early, taking 3 shots (2 on goal) within the first 7 minutes of the game. Cleary would settle in and start their attack on offense. Evalyn Cole would dump a pass off to Cleary teammate Morgan Vanos who dribbled the ball into the top of the box and struck the ball past the diving goalie to the bottom left part of the net, giving Cleary a 1-0 lead at the 10:31 mark. Just 2 minutes later Cleary would apply pressure to Cincinnati - Clermont as they tried to pass the ball back to the goalie to reset. Cleary's Mariah Krone would run up and steal the ball away from the goalie and score making it 2-0 at the 12:43 mark. Cincinnati-Clermont would not back down making their offensive presence known. Cleary goalkeeper Tara McGrath would block a corner kick, however, Cincinnati-Clermont's Ava Scherz was there to rebound it and put it in the back of the net making it a 2-1 game at the 19:23 minute mark. The 2-1 score would remain into halftime.
Cleary would come out of halftime looking strong with 3 corner kick opportunities and 3 shots but none would fall to the back of the net. At the 56:54 mark, Cincinnati-Clermont would capitalize on a corner kick and tie the game 2-2. Not much action would be taken from there on. Both teams would share shots with nothing falling into the net leaving the 2-2 score final.
Tara McGrath played all 90 minutes and made 4 saves on 6 shots on goal. Cleary outshot Cincinnati-Clermont 18-10, with a 4-2 advantage on shots on goal. Cleary also held a 6-3 advantage on corner kicks.
With the tie, Cleary is now 0-2-2 on the season and will be back in action on Monday as they take on the University of Rio Grande in Rio Grande, Ohio. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
