(Howell, MI)-- The Cleary Cougar women's soccer team opened WHAC play Saturday afternoon with a home matchup against the Defiance Yellow Jackets at Lake Trust Stadium.
Cristina de Miguel would get the scoring started with a long distance strike that went over the goalkeeper, with assists from Mariah Krone and Evalyn Cole in the buildup, to give Cleary an early 1-0 lead. Tamara Trumic would double the lead sixteen minutes later on a corner kick that bounced around in the box, and after being deflected by multiple players, found Trumic who powered it home, making the score 2-0. In the 38th minute, Miya Adams would get sprung free with a perfectly placed pass by Ashley Stover, to give the Cougars a 3-0 advantage heading into the halftime break.
The second half was more of the same, as Cleary would tack on another four goals in the final 45 minutes. Tamara Trumic scored her second goal of the game on a free kick that was perfectly placed into the top left portion of the net. Three minutes later, Cristina de Miguel scored her second goal of the game on a rebounded shot that was saved from Evalyn Cole. De Miguel beat the goalie to the ball, and placed it home for her goal. Late in the game, Alexia Nabozny would send Roza Bonner down the right hand side. Bonner would dribble onto her preferred right foot, and fired a shot that was able to beat the goalie for the team's sixth goal. In the dying seconds, Roza Bonner would send in a cross that deflected off the Yellow Jacket goalie, but fell to the foot of Summer Morrill for the game's seventh and final goal.
Tara McGrath and Bella Marsh faced 1 shot on target in the game to combine for the shutout victory. Cleary outshot Defiance 46-4, while also holding a 23-1 advantage on shots on goal. The Cougars also held a 13-1 advantage on corner kicks, while committing 16 fouls to Defiance's 9.
The win was Cleary's second in a row, and the Cougars will look to make it three in a row next Saturday, September 21, when they travel to Sylvania, Ohio to take on the Lourdes Gray Wolves in a WHAC matchup. The game is set to start at 4:00 PM.
