(Howell, MI)-- It was a physical matchup between the visiting Rochester Christian University Warriors and the Cleary Cougar women's soccer team, and the two teams would split the points Wednesday evening at Lake Trust Stadium.
The Warriors would score first on a corner kick in the 23rd minute to take the lead, but the Cougars would fight back and tie the game just six minutes later. On a throw in deep in their defensive half, Cristina de Miguel sent Mariah Krone up the left flank. Krone would make the unselfish play and found Payton Zeh all alone on the other side of the box, and Zeh did not miss to tie the game for the Cougars.
In the 50th minute, Cleary broke out on a counter attack started by Tamara Trumic, who passed it up to Cristina de Miguel, and Miguel sent a pass up the middle for Mariah Krone who was able to get behind the Warrior defense, and she would beat the goalie to give the Cougars a 2-1 advantage. That lead would only last twelve more minutes, as RCU was able to tie the game in the 62nd minute on a shot that bounced in off the left post. Tara McGrath helped to keep the game tied in the 70th minute when a free header by RCU's Olivia Howes forced a reaction save from McGrath. Neither team would be able to find the breakthrough down the stretch, and the game would end 2-2.
Tara McGrath earned her third draw of the season, making 6 saves on 8 shots faced. Mariah Krone's goal was her team leading 4th of the season, and her assist was her 3rd of the season, both lead the Cougars. Cleary was outshot 17-10 in the game, with 8-5 shots on goal favoring the Warriors.
Cleary is now 2-4-3 on the season, 1-1-1 in the WHAC. The Cougars will return to the road on Saturday, September 28, when they travel to Grand Rapids to take on the Cornerstone Golden Eagles in a WHAC contest. The game is scheduled to begin at 4:30 PM.
