(Howell, MI)-- The Cleary Cougar women's soccer team honored and recognized their ten seniors Saturday afternoon, and game them a game to remember, as they scored early and often to win on Homecoming against the UM-Dearborn Wolverines.
Cristina de Miguel got things going in the 9th minute to help the Cougars take an early lead. Mariah Krone would dribble up the middle and sent a pass out to the right for de Miguel, who turned and fired high, and above the Wolverine keeper, to score her fourth goal of the season. Eighteen minutes later, Payton Zeh would head the ball forward on a throw in to Mariah Krone, and Krone dribbled through traffic, and got behind the defense before slotting a shot into the bottom right corner of the goal for her fifth goal of the season. Cleary would control the game for the rest of the half, and took a 2-0 lead into the break.
In the second half, Cleary would score twice in just two minutes to expand their lead. Tamara Trumic scored, with assists from Mariah Krone and Alyssa Krenek, for Cleary's third goal, and Ambre Canado intercepted a pass just moments later before shooting it past the goalie to make it 4-0. In the 61st minute, Payton Zeh earned her second assist of the game, when she passed it wide to Morgan Vanos, who fired a strike into the side netting for the Cougars' fifth goal of the game.
Cleary outshot UM-Dearborn 20-10, while holding a 8-3 advantage on shots on target. Tara McGrath would make 3 saves while earning her third win of the season. The win was the second time this season Cleary defeated a team by at least five goals, after they beat Defiance earlier this season 7-0.
The win now gives Cleary a 3-6-3 record, 2-3-1 in the WHAC. The Cougars will be back at Lake Trust Stadium on Wednesday, October 9, when they host the Indiana Tech Warriors. The game is scheduled to start at 7:00 PM.
