(Howell, MI)-- The Cleary Cougar women's soccer team was at Lake Trust Stadium for the final time this regular season, as they played the Madonna Crusaders in a WHAC matchup on Breast Cancer Awareness Night in front of a crowd of 120.
In a first half that saw the Crusaders start on the front foot, the visitors would get the game's first breakthrough in the 23rd minute. After Cleary turned the ball over in their own defensive half, Madonna's Morgan Stack dribbled across the field, and fired a shot past goalie Tara McGrath and into the lower left portion of the net, giving Madonna a 1-0 lead.
Ten minutes later, Cleary would answer on a play set up by a throw-in. Mariah Krone held the ball up on the initial throw, before it was poked away and then picked up by Payton Zeh. Zeh would dribble up the left, and sent a cross back to the face of goal, finding a wide open Morgan Vanos, who fired a shot that would not miss, tying the game at 1-1.
The second half was a more balanced affair, and Cleary would certainly grow into the game, building some confidence, and creating some half-chances, but were unable to get the go-ahead goal late.
Tara McGrath would earn her fourth draw of the season, making 8 saves on 9 shots faced. The goal was Vanos' third of the season, while the assist was Zeh's sixth of the season.
Cleary was outshot 18-7 in the game, with Madonna holding a 9-2 advantage on shots on target. Cleary committed 12 fouls to Madonna's 9, and the Crusaders would hold a 5-3 advantage on corner kicks.
The draw now gives Cleary a 3-8-4 record overall, 2-5-2 in the WHAC. The Cougars will play their first of four games in a row on the road on Saturday, October 19, when they travel to Southfield to take on the Lawrence Tech Blue Devils. Kickoff is set for 7:00 PM.
