Men's Basketball Drops WHAC Matchup to Racers
(Lansing, MI)-- The Cleary Cougar men's basketball team held a halftime lead, but went cold from the floor, as they fell to the visiting Northwestern Ohio Racers 73-48 Wednesday evening in Lansing.
Jaylen Cole-Williams gave the Cougars a 3-2 lead on a made three pointer to get things going, and the two teams traded baskets, courtesy of a Bennie Crenshaw Jr. layup. Chris Williams would hit a free throw to expand the early lead to 6-4 through five minutes of play. Tied at 8-8, a Chris Williams pair of layups gave Cleary a 12-8 lead. Case Conley helped to extend that lead with a made free throw, and the score would be 13-8. After UNOH tied the game again, AJ Hess made a pair of free throws, Chris Williams hit a jumper, and Case Conley knocked in a three, and Cleary's lead would grow to seven points with a 22-15 score. UNOH went on a 6-0 run, but Cleary would not relinquish the lead in the half, and would hold on for a 29-27 lead at the half.
The second half was all Racers, as they would go on a 33-7 run to start the second half through ten minutes of play. The Cougars would stay cold shooting down the stretch, and the Racers would expand their lead before taking the game 73-48.
Chris Williams had a team high 14 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 steals. Jaylen Cole-Williams added 11 points for the Cougars. Cleary was held to 18% shooting in the second half, while losing the rebound battle 50-37. The two teams combined for 29 turnovers, with the Cougars committing 14 in the game.
The loss drops Cleary's record to 1-7 overall, 0-3 in the WHAC. The Cougars will be back at Gannon Gymnasium for a home game on Saturday, December 7, when they host the Concordia Cardinals. Tip-off is set for 7:30 PM.
