(Byron Center, MI)-- The Cleary Cougar ACHA D1 hockey team hit the road to West Michigan, as they played a game vs. the Aquinas College Saints. The game was rescheduled from its original date of November 19.
The Saints jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first 20 minutes of action, and their second goal was scored with :04 seconds left. Cleary would respond in the 2nd period with a pair of goals in a matter of four minutes. Ben Gledhow was sprung free on a long, direct pass from Zack Wiener, that set up a 1 vs. the goalie, and Gledhow was able to slot the puck home. Just a few minutes later, Jonny Gardiner scored, with assists from Zach Eakes and Cam Thomas, to tie the game. The 2-2 scoreline would hold through the rest of the period. In the 3rd period, Aquinas would take advantage of a Cougar mistake, and took the lead for good, as they scored a short-handed goal to make the score 3-2. Two minutes later, the Saints would score the dagger, taking a 4-2 lead. Desperate to force a comeback, Cleary pulled goalie Tyler Krasofsky with two minutes remaining, and the Saints would score the empty net goal, and went on to win 5-2.
Krasofsky would suffer the loss in goal, as he made 45 saves on 49 shots. Jonny Gardiner's goal was his 19th on the season, and 31st of his career. Ben Gledhow now has 16 goals, and sits at 95 career points.
Cleary drops to 10-19, 7-14 in the WHAC. The Cougars will be back in Byron Center on Friday evening to take on Aquinas, and will host the Saints Saturday evening at 8:00 PM at 140 Ice Den. The team will honor its seniors as part of their Senior Day festivities prior to warmups.
