(Lansing, MI)-- The Cleary Cougar women's basketball team held a very early lead, but the visiting St. Francis Fighting Saints got hot at the wrong time for the Cougars, and went on to hand Cleary their second straight defeat.
Taedom Stein and Rylee Thomas gave the Cougars a 5-0 lead after a layup and a made three in the very early goings. Another Taedom Stein pair of layups made it 9-5, but the Saints used three point shooting to go on a 19-8 run to finish the quarter, and the visitors held a 24-17 lead.
The second quarter saw the Fighting Saints expand their lead to double-digits. Cleary would cut the lead back to seven points, but were unable to get any closer in the quarter, and trailed 40-33 at the half.
In the second half, St. Francis outscored the Cougars 39-24, to expand the lead and take control of the game for good.
Samantha Hoelscher led Cleary with 11 points and 4 rebounds, while Mileisha Rodriguez added 10 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 steals.
Cleary is now 0-2 on the season, and will be on the road for the first time on Tuesday, October 29, when they travel to Spring Arbor to take on the Cougars. The game is set to begin at 7:00 PM.
